ARE SURGICAL IMPLANTS THE NEXT TERRORIST THREAT?

ABC7

On February 3, 2010, Dr. Linder was interviewed by ABC News per Robert Holguin regarding surgical implants, the possible next terrorist threat.  Articles from British newspapers have shown the possibility of terrorists planning attacks from Britain with bombs inside their bodies to foil new airport scanners.

An operation by M15 has uncovered evidence that there may be a new terrorist attack by placement of surgical bombs inside women’s bodies.  Explosives such as PETN could be placed in a plastic sack or implant and placed in the body and closed in the usual fashion.  This could be ignited by a hypodermic syringe, according to Britain reports, by injecting TATP through the skin into the explosive sacks.  Reports have shown that tests on real planes have shown that even a small amount of explosive material could create a small tear in a fuselage, leading to catastrophic failure.  If an implant was loaded with explosives, it could be detonated with a hypodermic syringe by injection of another chemical through the skin into the sack.  According to Australian security experts, the best way to detect these new kinds of implanted explosives is with a very old fashioned, but highly effective detection method, the nose of a highly trained bomb-sniffing dog.
