Asian Breast Augmentation

Los Angeles is known as a melting pot of people who come from all over the globe, especially the Asian population. Many patients who are of Chinese, Korean, or Thai background play a significant role in our patient base that undergo breast enhancement procedures every year. In general, they desire the most natural-looking results possible. For these patients, we often use a moderate plus silicone or saline implants, a little less upper pole fullness, a little more width, and a more natural slope.Breast Augmentation Before and After

This photo above shows a Chinese female with hypoplastic breasts with minimal breast tissue. She is a 32AA and desires to be a full B. She is an excellent candidate for moderate plus saline implants placed in the dual plane through a periareolar approach. The three-month postoperative results show excellent symmetry of the inframammary fold cleavage and upper pole fullness, as well as the nipples positioned evenly. The patients periareolar scars have healed well. In general, for the smaller framed oriental Asian patients, the moderate plus implants from Allergan seem to do the job.

What Are Moderate Plus Implants?

The moderate plus implants from Allergan are not too wide and they are not too narrow. They are just perfect, in between. They are also not too round as the AP projection is natural and they have an upper pole natural slope, even in very thin chested women. Natural-appearing breast implants depend upon the anatomy of the patient. These factors will include the inframammary fold diameter, the amount of glandular and breast tissue to cover the implant, and the thickness of the pectoralis major muscle. Positioning is often associated with the diameter of the chest wall which should be measured both preoperatively as well as in the operating room.

Natural Results (Case Study)

The following is an excellent case example of a Korean patient undergoing breast augmentation with silicone gel implants. Many women with naturally small breasts, such as the patient photographed below, often desire silicone gel implants for the most soft and natural appearance to the breast.

Before and After Breast Augmentation Procedure

The incision site that I make is under the periareolar under the nipple in order to hide or camouflage the scars. The darker pigment and melanin of the skin of Asian patients and oriental population may lead to hyperpigmentation and scarring. Therefore, I avoid the inframammary approach. The periareolar approach is much safer as I am able to place the implant in a precise position and release the muscle attachments of the pectoralis muscle medially along the inner chest area and laterally along the axillary armpit region.

The patient shown above is an example of bilateral breast augmentation with silicone high profile smooth gel implants through the dual plane, two-thirds under the muscle and lateral third over. Once again, saline and/or silicone implants can be used. However, in the majority of our Asian patients, they may undergo silicone gel cohesive Allergan or Mentor implants placed in the dual plane.
