Dr. Linder discusses the effects of Ozempic and Wegovy which are a GLP-1 agonists semaglutide on in patients undergoing plastic surgery. These medications were originally used for patients with diabetes. They were used to reduce your hemoglobin A1C. However, it was also found that Ozempic and Wegovy are very useful for weight loss and tremendous, massive weight loss similar to what’s found in gastric bypass patients.
As a result, these medications are injected once a month for several months and there’s significant weight loss. Let’s talk about significantly what happens to the breast when patients are on Ozempic or Wegovy or any of these GLP-I agonists. The weight is lost both fat and breast tissue, and there’s atrophy of the muscle as well. What happens is they lose volume and they lose skin or what we call skin grade three ptosis and they have massive ptosis or skin laxity.
How do we as plastic surgeons correct this? The massive weight loss causes us to use an implants in order to regain volume. Either saline or silicone can be above or below the muscle, depending upon the amount of breast tissue as well as breast lifts in order to tighten the skin, which of course, is going to lead to significant scarring, which is usually an anchored scar or wise pattern lift technique. Patients who have massive weight loss on the Semaglutide , GLP-I agonists, Wegovy, Ozempic, with the breasts are going to end up having both implants as well as breast lifts in order to regain their shape.
